Pioneers score five in the final frame to top Papermakers, 8-5

Pioneers move to 8-1 with big road win over Papermakers!

MOSINEE, Wis. — The Mosinee Papermakers scored twice in the game’s first 7:05, but it was the Portage Lake Pioneers hockey team who scored eight of the game’s next 11 goals to earn an 8-5 win on the road Friday night.

Trailing 2-0, the Pioneers got on the board just 48 seconds after the Papermakers had struck for the second time. Defenseman Riley McKay found the net at 7:53. Winger Cale Markham and center Nick Harris both assisted on the goal.

The Pioneers then evened the score at 2-2 when defenseman Craig Halonen scored an unassisted goal at 15:58.

In the middle frame, the Papermakers again scored twice, this time 33 seconds apart.

Looking for a spark, the Pioneers got a timely goal from Markham 4:04 after Mosinee took the 4-2 lead when he scored at 5:43. McKay picked up the lone assist on the goal.

Mosinee took a 5-3 lead into the second intermission after scoring at 9:44.

In the third, Halonen scored his second of the game less than two minutes in. Winger Anthony Harris and Mark Halonen both assisted on the goal.

Nick Harris evened the game at 5-5 with his goal at 7:21. Defenseman Jamie Laux and McKay both assisted on the goal.

Laux then set up McKay’s second tally of the night, which gave the Pioneers their first lead of the night, at 11:47.

Winger Brett Hauswirth then scored twice over the game’s final 7:11 to seal the win. Forward Devyn LaCourt assisted on both goals.

Goaltender Brian Brzenzinski made 30 saves to earn the win.
