The Portage Lake Pioneers lost both games in a 2-game series against their historic rival, the Calumet Wolverines, 3-8 on Friday and 2-3 on Saturday.

The Calumet Wolverines were all over the Pioneers in the 1st period Friday night with 3 goals scored before heading into the locker room. The Pioneers didn't let the barrage face them as they put 3 tallies on the board within the first 5 minutes, coming from Anthony Harris, Chris Chegwidden, and Jonathan Bostwick. The opponent controlled the second half of the period and 3 goals were put up on the board before the end of the 2nd, for a score of 3-6. The third period didn't favor too well for the Pioneers where the Wolves were able to put 2 more goals in the back of the net for a final score of 3-8. Trevor Lowney of the Pioneers had 26 saves on the night, compared to 36 for the Wolverine's Ian Carroll.

The Pioneers came out skating hard on their home ice but found themselves down 1-0 going into the second. It was a back and forth second period until the Wolverines put 2 goals in half way through the period. The Pioneers leading scorer, Cody Sivonen made a perfectly placed shot from the bottom of the circles, hitting both pipes until finding the back of the net. The team was down 1-3 going into the third. Again, Cody Sivonen found some room with a shot, five-hole, and made it a one-goal game for a 2-3 score. The Pioneers kept the pressure on, outshooting the opponent but couldn't find a way to score another, losing 2-3. Phil Mattila of the Pioneers had 36 saves, while Bryan Miller had 26 for the Wolverines.

The Pioneers will have another 2-game series against the Calumet Wolverines this coming weekend, 12/29 and 12/30.
