Pioneers open season with road losses at Fond du Lac
2017-11-12The Portage Lake Pioneers lost both games against the Fon du Lac Bears in their season opening weekend on the road, 3-7 in both contests.
The Pioneers got off to a rocky start, finding themselves down 3-0 after the first. In the second, the Bears managed to put another tally on the board before Jonathan Bostwick got the Pioneers their first goal of the season when he found the back of the net late in the period. Both Nick Aird and Cody Sivonon scored in the third but it wasn't enough as the bears were able to answer back with three more goals, resulting in the 3-7 loss for the Pioneers. Phil Mattila had 42 saves with the Pioneers putting 23 shots on net.
The second matchup faired better for the Pioneers as they began to find their stride, finding themselves up 2-0 after the first with goals coming from Cody Sivonen and Jonathan Bostwick. The Bears were able to rally back in the second and regained the lead going into the third period, 3-2. Trevor Ploe was able to tie the game up with a goal half way through the period but the Bears managed to run away with the win with 4 unanswered goals through the end of the game, resulting in another 3-7 loss for the Pioneers. Trevor Lowney made 31 saves on the night, as the Pioneers were able to get 32 shots on net.
